Foundland is an independent online shop run by two people, Sarah Khalaf and Arthur Mingard. Since 2018 we have brought back gifts and homewares from Japan, Korea, the Middle East and further afield, many with a cat or dog in them, and most of them exclusive to us in the UK.
We work with makers we have met: a blacksmith town in Yamagata City, a candle atelier in Shiga working since 1914, a ceramicist in the mountains of Saitama. On our shelves you'll find Japanese garden tools from Masakuni, Yamahiro and Tsurumaki, ceramics by Isao Kimura, sawara cypress bath bowls (oke) and bath salts, Japan Rail moquette slippers and pen cases, hariko (Japanese papier-mâché), prints and tea.
Think of a Japanese konbini (corner shop) crossed with a department store in its 1980s heyday.
