Mackintosh invented the waterproof coat, and has made it by hand in Scotland for 200 years.
- Origin: Glasgow chemist Charles Macintosh patented his waterproof bonded cotton in 1823; the first coats went on sale in 1824. The garment still carries his name: the "mac".
- The craft: Two layers of cotton are bonded around a thin layer of natural rubber. Each coat is hand cut, hand glued and sewn, then its seams are taped by hand for a watertight finish.
- Where it's made: The brand's own workshops in Cumbernauld, Scotland, and Nelson, Lancashire.
- Credentials: Long-time maker for houses including Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, and collaborator with labels such as C.P. Company, Studio Nicholson and Carhartt WIP.
